Ironwood is native to Minnesota and grows slowly. It does well in shade and can persist in the forest understory making it an excellent woodland replacement for buckthorn. Conversely, it can appear quite formal in a landscape setting. It has fine branches, hop-like fruit, and shredded looking bark. Ironwood has yellow fall color and retains its leaves, which offers winter interest. Full sun to full shade.
