Blue beech is a smaller stature tree native to Minnesota. This tree has smooth blue-gray bark and orange/red fall color. Blue beech produces hop-like fruit, which is ornamental and benefits wildlife. This tree prefers moist well-drained soil but tolerates clay and periodic short-term flooding soil conditions. It is a slower-growing tree but could be used to replace buckthorn in a woodland or provide seasonal interest in a more formal yard. Full sun to full shade.
