The Finance department provides financial and information technology services to the City Council, City Administrator, departments, and agencies. The department manages day-to-day financial transactions including general accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, utility billing, investments, and risk management. The department also coordinates the City's budget process, five-year Capital Improvement Program, and Tax Increment Financing Plan.

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the City of Lakeville for 20 consecutive years. In order to be awarded a Certificate of Achievement of Excellence, a government must publish an easily readable and efficiently organized comprehensive annual financial report, and the contents must conform to the program requirements. Such reports must satisfy both generally accepted accounting principles and applicable legal requirements.
